It is particularly important to encourage children to read, especially in primary schools. Providing children with free access to books is crucial for their intellectual and moral development.
The Frankfurt Cultural Committee and its partners therefore issued an appeal, for the eighth time in a row, for donations of books to be given to primary schools. Deichmann is one of the 14 sponsors who responded to this appeal and made it possible to send new books to 56 primary schools in Frankfurt.

"A safe start – providing opportunities" is the name of the support service offered by CJD Essen (Christliche Jugenddorf Deutschland e.V.) for pregnant women or families who need support in looking after their baby. The Dr Heinz-Horst Deichmann Foundation took on the start-up financing of the project in 2008. Because of the success of this "early aid" scheme, projects are now also being supported by the Foundation in Berlin and Kiel.

Nordstadt is Dortmund's youngest and liveliest district. It is also where all sorts of challenges such as unemployment, the integration of people with a history of immigration and poverty are tackled by "Stern im Norden e.V.", which is supported by the Dr Heinz-Horst Deichmann Foundation. The Mums' Café, teens' meeting place, homework support from Monday to Thursday and a free lunch are available for all the hungry kids in Hirtenstraße. The Christian faith is the motivation behind the work of "Stern im Norden" [Star in the North] and the basis for welcoming every single person.

Gran Canaria, Mainz, Berlin, Athens, Duisburg and Rome are the marathon stages for Pater Tobias in 2014. Last year, he ran 295 km so that he could actively help children in need in Duisburg: KIPa-cash-4-kids, or Child Sponsorship for Children in Need, is the name of one of his projects. He wants every kilometre to help, because according to statistics, for example, one in seven young people in Germany is poor. The priest also works for the LebensWert [Worth Living] project in Duisburg; two offices have been set up, staffed by social workers who can, for example, provide flexible, very precise assistance for poor and homeless people. Confidential advice, help with self-help, irrespective of age, religion, gender or nationality, are actively supported by the Dr Heinz-Horst Deichmann Foundation.
