Internationally active, locally rooted: DEICHMANN SE is expanding its headquarters in Essen with a new administration and office building. It represents a coherent overall concept that blends harmoniously into the urban environment. The new campus combines modernity, internationality and a pleasant working environment.
As the heart of the construction project, the new light-flooded main building with five storeys will become the main hub on the DEICHMANN campus. The building was designed by Hamburg-based architects gmp.
„The project represents a necessary investment in the future viability of our family business,” explains Heinrich Deichmann, Chairman of the Board of Directors of DEICHMANN SE. “Especially in times like these, it is important to look ahead and invest in growth with foresight and courage. My father erected the first building here in 1968. Back then, everything still fitted under one roof. Since then, our company has grown continuously – always under our own steam, by the way. The new five-storey building is therefore an expression of the positive development of our company over the past decades. And it is an investment in the future of our group of companies. Even after 110 years, DEICHMANN stands for continuity, reliability and foresight.”“
The project will convert the campus to contemporary working environments with a pleasant feel, and follows an overall ecological concept that also takes account of developments in energy supply and energy management. Renewable energy in the form of photovoltaics and geothermal energy will also be used in the new building.
At the same time, the existing buildings are being brought up to date to meet the changing requirements for contemporary workplaces and structures – for example with open space and modern team and conference areas. Around 1,200 employees work at the headquarters.

The prestigious new building with underground parking on two levels will be the entrance to the campus and will be surrounded by well-tended green spaces with a park-like character when the construction project is completed. The existing footpaths and connections on the site will remain accessible to the public. The main entrance to the new building will be relocated directly to Aktienstraße as a prestigious corporate entrance and the surrounding residential area will be relieved of traffic congestion. The existing trees will be preserved and supplemented by new plantings.
The target date for the new company campus is towards the end of 2025, when the DEICHMANN employees, who are housed at alternative locations during the large-scale conversion, including Parkstadt in Mülheim, will move back to the company headquarters in Essen-Schönebeck. From here, numerous areas will also be supported with a view to the Group’s international business. In the future, further buildings and conversion stages in the existing buildings are possible in principle and will depend on future space requirements. In this way, the company will be able to continue to grow in line with demand in the future, as it has done throughout its more than 100-year history.
